Edith Cushing, an aspiring author in late 19th-century America, is swept off her feet by the charming and enigmatic British aristocrat, Sir Thomas Sharpe. Despite her father's reservations and the sudden, mysterious death of a key figure in her life, Edith marries Thomas and moves to his decaying family mansion in rural England. The mansion, known as Allerdale Hall, is filled with dark secrets and unsettling presences. Thomas' sister, Lucille, maintains a tight grip over the household and chills Edith with her unsettling demeanor.

As Edith settles into her new life, she begins to experience disturbing supernatural occurrences and unearths grim details about the Sharpe family's past. The mansion itself, soaked in blood-red clay from the mines below, seems to be a living entity that entraps its inhabitants. Confronted with spectral visions and mounting dread, Edith must uncover the layers of deceit surrounding her new husband and his sister before it's too late. The more she learns about Allerdale Hall and the Sharpe siblings, the more perilous her situation becomes.
